What do you mean by, "couldn't get it to read"? Does your operating system not recognize that the drive is plugged in at all?

Re: Help with harddrive-crash!
im using win7. it shows the drive in disc management, but it doesnt show up in 'my computer', and i cant open it or see any of the data on it.
it was dropped, stupid fucking dog, but i was able to use it for a couple hours after. i was mid-transfer and it froze up. i shut laptop off, and when i restarted the drive wouldnt show up anymore. i did some reading, and seen someone mention taking the drive out of the external case and plugging it into PC to retrieve files.. but when i put it in the PC, nothing happened.. at all... im guessing its busted, but ive read that it may still be possible to get some of the files off it. i even read something about putting it in the freezer or some shit... that 3tb was full... and i only had half of it or so backed up..

Yes, putting them in the freezer sometimes works, but it has to be in an air tight Ziploc bag because of condensation. Anyway, You said it showed up in disk management while it was still in the external enclosure? Put it back in there, if at all possible, and download this tool: http://www.piriform.com/recuva
If you can see the drive in the list on that program, recover what you can.
A few months ago, I remapped my delete key to act as if I was using shift+delete instead (shift+delete skips putting files in the recycle bin at all), and when I was still getting used to it, I accidentally "permanently" deleted 300gb of Game of Thrones episodes. Recuva found them all and was able to recover them.

Re: Help with harddrive-crash!
I've been collecting for many years now and I have never had a hardrive crash. All my friends have them but never me. And I have only used 3 different external hdds all these years... I guess I'm pretty lucky. I better back-up all my stuff because it's just a matter of time before I lose it, I guess. And I have VERY rare stuff that I know I'll never find again.
Try to get Steff into this thread. he's very experiensed with these things. he'll probebly help you!

Re: Help with harddrive-crash!
I've had a few drives die on me over the years, but now I use a RAID array so I have all my drives mirrored. I have 14 terabytes of space I'm sitting on, I've learned from my mistakes.

Re: Help with harddrive-crash!
been gone a few days.. been an "interesting", and busy, week.
i just burned my entire music collection to dual layer dvds.. so i know that is at least safe..
when a large hard drive crashes, its like the pain in the ass that keeps giving... i keep thinking of more and more shit, as time passes, that was on that damn drive.. comics, horror flicks, pics, adult magazines, music, apps, etc, etc.
its fucking aggravating. lol.

Re: Help with harddrive-crash!
I can imagen. I've lost some stuff along the years because I accidently removed them and I remember how painful that was. Stuff that I never going to see/hear again. But a hdd crash would make me kill myself... I feel blessed for never have that happend to me.amatoxin wrote:been gone a few days.. been an "interesting", and busy, week.

Re: Help with harddrive-crash!
If you have memory issues of what was actually on the drive, make a list with Windows Powershell.
Here's how to do it on Windows:
And here's how to do it on OSX or Linux
